From TSBVI Outreach Media to Everyone: TodayÕs handout can be found here: https://tsbvi.live/coffeehour From Efren Moreno to Everyone: If the child who is left behind begins to receive more opportunities to communicate can they catch up to the other child or will the gap stay the same? From Kaycee Bennett to Everyone: Thanks, Efren, great question! From valery kircher to Host and Panelists: What about CVI- is there a link between the two that is lack of experience and CVI - From Janet Anderson to Host and Panelists: I want to make sure I'm reading the chart correctly. Does the plastic period for vision end at 3 year? From Laura Elmer to Host and Panelists: Why are ECI programs and infant VI /O&M programs not designed and implemented to capture this period of neuro-plasticity? From Kaycee Bennett to Laura Elmer, Host and Panelists: I think this is verifying what we know about how important early intervention is. Hopefully programs around the world are realizing how necessary it is to intervene as soon as possible. From Janet Anderson to Host and Panelists: Will you talk about the brain making circuits in different ways for a child who is blind. For example the circuits that are made for learning through touch. From Malina Lindell to Host and Panelists: Kaycee, can we wait for questions, as the interruption stops her from completing the section/thought she's working on? It's happened twice, now. She stopped talking about kids with hearing loss to answer the CVI question... Thanks! From Kaycee Bennett to Malina Lindell, Host and Panelists: Hi! She asked me to come on any time there's a question in the chat. I will try to wait until her sentence is complete so she finishes her thought before seeing me. Thank you! From John Rose to Everyone: If a child is born blind, is there a different part of the brain that is developing instead of the part devoted to vision? From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: we have research that shows the visual cortex "lighting up" when a child is reading braille. Exactly what Dr. Cameron is describing From Efren Moreno to Everyone: Can you talk about the pathway creation when a physical component is introduced (I.e. movement)? From Kaycee Bennett to Everyone: TodayÕs handout can be found here: https://tsbvi.live/coffeehour From Patricia Beecher to Host and Panelists: What about stress exposure for adults? Would that have an impact on neural circuits? Certainly our staff members are experiencing significant effects of the pandemic at work. From Alicia Combs to Host and Panelists: I'm sorry I have a meeting at 12:30 when is this meet scheduled to end From Kaycee Bennett to Alicia Combs, Host and Panelists: Dr. Cameron's portion ends at 12:45 CST. The whole presentation will end at 3pm CST. From dana ingwerson to Everyone: do these games work with switch interface? From Laura Anccilotto to Everyone: I tried First Pathways but there were questions about my child but I am a teacher and I would like to check them before offering to the parents as I even have to translate. How can I do that? From Nolan to Host and Panelists: Also would we use adjusted age for these game categories? From Laura Anccilotto to Everyone: Thank you! From Sara Kitchen to Everyone: It sounds like these games are for partners, not for the child to play independently. From Kaycee Bennett to Everyone: TodayÕs handout can be found here: https://tsbvi.live/coffeehour From Janet Anderson to Host and Panelists: Children and adults tend to like to do things that they are successful at. It is difficult to interest kids to do things that are hard for them. As a result, they don't do it over and over again and don't form the necessary circuits. Any suggestions? From Nolan to Everyone: For those who may have to leave early. Will entire 4 hours of presentation be available online? From Kaycee Bennett to Everyone: Yes, this is being recorded and will be available. From Nolan to Everyone: Greatly appreciated. These first two hours were fantastic, looking forward to viewing remaining panel discussions online! Thanks so much for this presentation. From Kaycee Bennett to Everyone: Thanks for joining us From Kristina Gathings to Everyone: Hi Wendy From Joanne Corwin to Host and Panelists: Kaycee, Could you let my video come on? From Dr. Judy Cameron to Host and Panelists: I also canÕt turn on my video From Rachel Morsbach to Everyone: Hi Joanne! From Kristina Gathings to Everyone: Hi Joanne From Joanne Corwin to Rachel Morsbach, Host and Panelists: Howdy!! :) From Joanne Corwin to Kristina Gathings, Host and Panelists: Hi Kris!! ;) From Kaycee Bennett to Everyone: What were key lessons youÕve learned during the pandemic? Please share any surprises, heartbreaks, losses, and challenges that your team experienced. From KAREN BORG to Everyone: I was stunned at how hard it hit some of my most effective teachers, who were not necessarily, the most effective VIRTUAL teachers. Our own staff stress at trying to juggle home and work was hugely impactful. and This was a heartbreak. From KAREN BORG to Everyone: Equally impactful was how MUCH our coaching improved overall and how much we are committed to keeping virtual services as part of our package of services, to keep what we've gained. From Patricia Beecher to Host and Panelists: love that idea of setting up the parent to be the expert and the trainer! From Angela Pozzuoli Tabb to Everyone: challenges: Lack of resources/access to internet in rural communities of some of our families. Stress levels of families with multiple children and multiple therapies and how to manage it all. Extreme zoom fatigue, even now it continues. From Megan Mogan to Everyone: Our experiences with that inequity piece are still very fresh in our minds for sure - and bring us into that hot topic of Infrastructure right now From Kaycee Bennett to Everyone: What were innovative solutions that came because of the pandemic that you will utilize going forward? From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: Electronic forms! From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: Use of screenshots of the child to save a moment to share with family members who were not able to attend the virtual visit. From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: Staff became more proficient with coaching model - truly working with families to be the expert. From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: Use of videos From Paula Landry to Everyone: We started recording parts of our zoom visits for the same reason. Short video clips are so helpful! From Nakeshea Lewis to Everyone: I think the biggest thing we did was to create ways for families to stay connected. We created an EI family Facebook group. Switched to virtual music therapy and other activities. I was able to record portions of my virtual sessions to help bring attention to visual behaviors families may have missed during sessions. We also created YouTube videos for families with ideas and topics From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: Ability to see more of the house / interactions with others to have more perspective and opportunities for the child. The use of an ipad helped to go from room to room. Also the inclusion of other family members zooming in from other locations. From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: have families get together during virtual events so they had connections through the distance technology - some of these families have continued to stay in contact with one another From Angela Pozzuoli Tabb to Everyone: Using items from around their house to use for learning!! Parents became creative and excited to share what they found that was working without buying specific items to teach various concepts: hard/soft, using items specific to rooms in house like measuring spoons & cups in kitchen; toothbrush in bathroom, etc. Loved the creativity virtual provided. A more active learning approach to encourage purposeful movements and discoveries. Gave parents a more involved opportunity to best serve and engage their children. It was beautiful! I saw growth in the children that their parents really took a more involved approach. Sent additional videos/resources to families. I loved how our field really stepped up from all over the world to teach, train, and learn together! Less drive time to be able to serve more children, especially in rural areas where drive time could be an hour from each other. Helped me step into more of a coaching role, which was great. From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: Charging stations with community resources, opportunities to connect and share resources. Judy is happy! From Steven Lindauer to Everyone: Innovation of Colorado's vision screening protocol (Parent Questionnaire) to identify children in need of support. Training was provided to EI professionals in 13 states, plus Canada. Even as referrals into early intervention declined during the pandemic, referrals for vision services increased. Parent Questionnaire was effective in identifying children with potential CVI. From Paula Landry to Everyone: It's so much easier to schedule co-visits with other team members. Collaboration with other providers has been wonderful! And reduces time families are spending in front of the iPad/computer From Nakeshea Lewis to Everyone: Yes! I was able to do more joint visits with other providers than I ever did in person From Angela Pozzuoli Tabb to Everyone: We were encouraged to ask how the families were doing and if all their needs were met, and our early intervention agency developed a list of family resources, including diaper/formula pick ups, food drives, etc. Beautiful because if our families basic needs arenÕt met then it creates a whole set of other challenges. From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: Study groups were formed. Staff found dedicted time to connect to equalize information. Material drop offs. From Steven Lindauer to Everyone: An unintended consequence we need to address. We have become more comfortable with telehealth with the benefit of no drive time. The financial reimbursement for our teachers needs to be reviewed. Example, $90 per visit (1 hour without drive time) is now $45 per visit (30 min to drive to family, 1 hour for visit, 30 min to drive home or to next family), plus no reimbursement for mileage. Creates a conundrum - we want to be in-person, but it further reduces comp for an underpaid community of providers. From Adam Graves to Host and Panelists: I have found that as a consultant I spend more time listening these days than talking about solutions. Sometimes it seems like the solution that some parents and practitioners are looking for is just a chance to talk through a stressful confusing time full of mixed emotions. IÕm curious if the panelist have experienced this and how do find the balance between just listening and offering educational assistance? From Angela Pozzuoli Tabb to Everyone: Our president at the center did weekly personal development and encouragement zooms to keep overall moral up since we were not together. I know it is not ECI, but our center had an increase of job placements of our clients last year which was exciting. Our music and art therapy departments stepped up with virtual boxes and activities for our families. From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: Download Marco Polo - From Mary Jones to Host and Panelists: Zoom sessions have inspired new approaches including ‘activity boxesÕ used for session only to help facilitate novelty; imitation; demonstration. Provision of individual therapy boxes helped to take the pressure off parents to find items ‘in the momentÕ. Also, I have found it useful to get permissions to video record sessions, to help not only myself to reflect on set up/prompting/pacing etc, but also so prepare short skills clips to send to parents to reinforce learning and share with other family members. From TSBVI Outreach Media to Everyone: The chat will be saved and shared when we post the recording. From Megan Mogan to Everyone: I was also going to mention that the Early Intervention approach had to be translated to school age services. I really leaned into early intervention providers to help me teach K12 providers on family coaching and home visits! From Patricia Beecher to Host and Panelists: I agree! Our teachers really relied on the expertise of our EI providers and they were soo helpful! From Nakeshea Lewis to Everyone: For the families who struggled with virtual and lost motivation, what strategies worked to refuel their interest? From Patricia Beecher to Host and Panelists: working on home-based routines forms even for school-aged kids will continue!!! :) From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: Learning activities were developed with simple instructions that could involve the whole family with a focus on fun and functioanality From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: Sibling technology power! From KAREN BORG to Everyone: We did seasonal activity boxes (porch drop offs) and virtual make and takes to create camaraderie. That helped bring some families back From Steven Lindauer to Everyone: Yes, Paula. Learning Experiences tied to ECC in context of everyday routines. Families wanted fun activities they can do that are educationally and developmentally appropriate. Flexible for the TVI and caregivers for their goals and circumstances. From Tanni Anthony to Everyone: Use of phone as a means of staying in touch. Drive bys with a trusted person. Also appreciating the need for people to take a break, as needed (for a short period of time). From Mary Jones to Everyone: Thankyou From Tara Fusilier to Everyone: One of my most challenging students had a hard time staying on his zoom lesson for a full 45 minutes, so his mom and I would spend time left over to really delve into important aspects of his challenges. It was awesome! From Kathleen Aranda-Myers to Everyone: A terrific presentation and great group of panelists! Thank you for sharing your professional experiences to reinforce and support our work with families. Thank you! From katie Knapp to Host and Panelists: Thank you for all of the wonderful and creative info presented today. Being new to EI and FSC work, itÕs very motivating and inspiring to hear from all of you!
