CHAT - Abacus Continued with John Rose From Debra Fournier-Pursel: Hi from Spring, TX From Cecilia Robinson: Welcome! Thank you for logging on Tech Team Time. From Kathy Schneider To TSBVI Outreach Media 4(privately): I cannot sign up for future tea times or coffee hour. I have sent a message but have not been contacted. Can you please direct me to get this fixed? From Cecilia Robinson: Link for worksheet is https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NdoBmzH9Yris4ovCevYnRAJl9N7ldWhd/view From TSBVI Outreach Media 4 To Kathy Schneider(privately): Are you not seeing them in ESC Works or were you just just not able to sign up for them? I’ll have to double check whether they are in ESC Works yet. I know we don’t have sessions for the next two weeks because of Spring Break and a conference. From Natalie Guara: Is that the worksheet for this week? From Kathy Schneider To TSBVI Outreach Media 4(privately): I see the sessions, sign in, and do everything I have alway done. At the last step it says an error has occurred in processing and try later. This has gone on for a week. The next session I want to do is at the end of March. From TSBVI Outreach Media 4 To Kathy Schneider(privately): If you want to give me your email address I can forward your issue to our ESC Works guy and hopefully he can get it figured out. From Kathy Schneider To TSBVI Outreach Media 4(privately): Kschneider@llschools.net Thank you! From John Rose: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PusV09WDJmudOU6d_jT2qPrwh9i67Y1l/view?usp=sharing From TSBVI Outreach Media 4 To Kathy Schneider(privately): Thanks, I’ll see what I can do. From Kathy Schneider To TSBVI Outreach Media 4(privately): I appreciate your help. I really like attending the sessions. From Jill Cribbs: That should be 1360 From Natalie Guara: yes From Allison Hintz: this is hard to follow. From Emilie McConnell: you lost me when we had to move the 16 from the end of the abacus to the 100's place From Emilie McConnell: That is too abstract for my student! From Cecilia Robinson: Students may get a kick out of using more than one abacus From Allison Hintz: It seems like you just have to *know* the answer in order to use the abacus. I haven't used it much with my students. Have you all? Seems way too difficult for most B/VI students. From Taylor VanderHeiden: I think you really have to understand spatial concepts of math and how numbers relate to each other! From Natalie Guara: If a student does not know their math facts it does make it more difficult From Allison Hintz: It just seems so obsolete now that we can ask Siri or Google to do the math for us:/ Curious what others think on this matter. From Debra Fournier-Pursel: Are SIRI and/or Google allowed on the STAAR math or the EOC?? From Allison Hintz: I don't have any completely blind students currently, so I don't use the abacus. But I suppose it would be helpful for a very bright student with blindness, especially for testing, where a calculator might not be allowed. From Debra Fournier-Pursel: Calculators are mandatory in HS From Natalie Guara: same with our 3rd grader From Allison Hintz: I believe it can be added as an accommodation. From Debra Fournier-Pursel: If it’s used as an accommodation on a daily basis, it can be allowed on the state assessments as an accommodation. At least it was when I was a drag years ago From Allison Hintz: So interesting. Thanks for sharing, Cecilia. From Debra Fournier-Pursel: diag
