You can find it on our txdeafblindproject.org website Sarah Francis: our students do SO much better with hand under hand! Kathi Garza: Yes, Sarah! I'm so glad to hear you say that! Angela Pozzuoli Tabb: Can’t stress HUH enough with reasonings for why it’s a better option with less defensive behaviors. Kate Borg (she/her): I love that she tells him to be careful after she ran him into the chair... Jody DeLeon: Where is his cane? Zenobia Davison: Touching without alerting him. Physically directing all of his movesl Not alerting him for different sensory. Audrey Kelley: I love how he is independently exploring some of the materials as she introduces them. Knowing you won't be bodily grabbed and made to interact makes it so much safer to explore! Kate Borg (she/her): Great point, Audrey! Zenobia Davison: 2nd Video: He is feeling her movement. She is describing actions before presenting them. Allowing him to actively engage in lesson. Kathi Garza: It's amazing to see how much trust he must have for this teacher to be so willing to explore and stay engaged with her through something very new to him. Kathi Garza: Totally Madelyn Angela Pozzuoli Tabb: I was told by a teacher that nothing would ever get done if she used HUH, no time to allow for that. Angela Pozzuoli Tabb: So heartbreaking because we did HUH during our times together for O&M. Kate Borg (she/her): Yes Kathi. And frankly, there's a lot less "fighting" with HUH. I think it's much more efficient than HOH. Angela Pozzuoli Tabb: This student was a biter (nonverbal) so he bit more when HOH was constantly being used through his entire day. I’d bite also. Sarah Francis: sometimes is a task analysis step says HOH and the next step is HUH, I'll "cheat" and skip to the next step early (because some professionals aren't interested in changing their methods) Joanne Szabo: Singing songs like clap hands or touch a body part. Works well! Kaycee Bennett: Sometimes it takes a long time and I always try to tell teachers if the student pulls their hands away, that's okay! Teachers sometimes feel like they failed if the student pulls away, but I see that as a win that they had control over their own body to do so! Tammy Sidler: Will we be able to print this presentation? I love the elephant pic & want to share with other TVI's Kate Borg (she/her): Yes. The handout is the powerpoint information. https://tsbvi.live/coffeehour Tammy Sidler: thank you Angela Pozzuoli Tabb: I started explaining and demonstrating HUH to the rest of the team and they witnessed sessions with us and how receptive he was with technique. Then they started changing what they were doing and saw progress which carried over to encouraging HUH also! Yay! Kate Borg (she/her): Love that, Angela!! Kaycee Bennett: Yay, Angela! What a win! Lynne McAlister: That's great Angela! Angela Pozzuoli Tabb: I printed HUH documents and shared videos to help them understand that it was beyond me just saying why it was important for our children with VI. All compliments of TSBVI beautiful resources to share! Kate Borg (she/her): Remember to teach, too, that hearing is NOT an automatic substitute for vision. These senses develop in different ways and at very different rates. Repeated experiences are vital for our kiddos! Sarah Francis: ugh the state assessments drove me bananas this year for all our students, but especially for our db friends! Kate Borg (she/her): Jennifer, not sure why. Try logging in to Google Drive. If you still can't access, send me an email. borgk@tsbvi.edu Angela Pozzuoli Tabb: Just love these!! Kaycee Bennett: Great job, thank you Kathi and Lynne! Michelle Urias: Thank you! Angela Pozzuoli Tabb: Beautiful presentation!! Can’t wait to share with teams!!! Sam Oxley: Very informative and thought provoking - many thanks! Linda Jordan: Thanks to you both! Kristina Gathings: Thank you! Sarah Francis: so excited for next week! 😃 Angela Pozzuoli Tabb: Will you post handouts link again Kate Borg (she/her): Today’s code: 080921 Kathi Garza: handout: https://tsbvi.live/coffeehour Angela Pozzuoli Tabb: Fun topics coming up.
