CHAT - Braille Displays

From Margaret Hunt: Hi from NC

From Sherilyn Frisque: Trying to figure out what would work best for my student

From Sherilyn Frisque: yes please!

From YA JU KUO: So sorry I missed the first 3 mins. Do we have an opening code for CEU credits?

From Sherilyn Frisque: Will it work with a Chromebook?

From Sherilyn Frisque: sorry lol

From Shannon Spettel: I thought the Mantis was the only one that worked with Chromebooks

From YA JU KUO: Thank you! 🙏

From Alaisha Johnson: I connected it to a Chromebook the other day but couldn't figure out how to get it to work!

From Alaisha Johnson: It could have just been my lack of skills though!

From Brittany Smith, CTVI: Typically the braille displays rely on a screen reader. ChromeVox is not great at reading everything, so therefore it won’t show up on the Braille display.

From Sherilyn Frisque: Thanks Friends!

From Stacey Chambers: So if they are not independent in navigating websites, that could be justification for the paper braille.

From Stacey Chambers: Thanks!

From Stacey Chambers: Are they listening to that passage or reading on the display?

From Stacey Chambers: Thanks

From Stacey Chambers: As a braille community - are we concerned about fluency and only getting 14-40 characters at a time? My student uses the Braille display very efficienctly but is not used to reading long passages with it.

From Dorottyn Cabrera: Will maps be described for history?

From Veronica Gunn: In California, we have access to .brf and .prn files and we can emboss in the moment. So, we can emboss the longer passages. (for state testing)

From Stacey Chambers: 8th

From Stacey Chambers: I like the simplicity of the braille online version - could this be used for print readers?

From Stacey Chambers: Some of my print readers have a hard time with the format when we’ve tried. We have tried using it unzoomed under a video magnifier.

From Veronica Gunn: In California, it's called streamline. It's a default for braille users, but can be chosen for print users.

From Stacey Chambers: That is awesome!

From Veronica Gunn: Maybe ask the testing company if streamline is possible

From Stacey Chambers: Yes, that would be so helpful!

From Stacey Chambers: The tiny arrow 🙂

From Michael Horvat: Best display to be able to control/navigate a pc? Little keyboard ability

From Stacey Chambers: Gotta run - thank you Donna!!!!!!!

From Michael Horvat: Thanks!!
