Audio Description: Each student has a braillewriter and abacus in front of him. PARAS: 54 + 23 TEACHER: We just did that one. What‘s the one underneath that? PARAS: 77 + 53 TEACHER: hint, hint, hint PARAS: There are secrets for 3. TEACHER: You're going to have to probably use two secrets on this one. Two secrets, two secrets. So, go ahead and try. I'm going to give you about a minute of thinking time, okay, for you to try it on your own. Try, try, try not cry, cry, cry. Go ahead and try it. Ready, go ahead and go. Audio Description: Paras works on the problem using the abacus. Joey is not using the braillewriter, or the abacus. TEACHER: This is a hard one. You got it already, Joe? JOEY: yep TEACHER: Okay. Stop flapping- Audio Description: Joey writes on the braillewriter. [sound of braillewriter] The teacher checks his work. TEACHER: Tough one isn‘t it, Paras? Audio Description: The teacher whispers to Joey. TEACHER: [whispering] What‘d you get? JOEY: [whispering] 110 TEACHER: (whispering) Alright. Audio Description: The teacher takes a talking calculator and sets it next to Joey's braillewriter. TEACHER: Look at those secrets, that‘s right. They're on your left, if you don't know, look on your left. You got it. Audio Description: Paras consults the brailled list of secrets. Paras returns to his abacus. TEACHER: You've got about 10 seconds left Paras. Audio Description: Joey fidgets in his chair. TEACHER: (whispering) Do you need to do some chair push-ups? You're awfully antsy. JOEY: No. TEACHER: Okay. Audio Description: Paras, again, consults the list of secrets. TEACHER: We'll take a break before we do subtraction, okay? Go walk around a little bit. Alright, time's up Paras, what'd you get? PARAS: I don't know how to do it. TEACHER: Alright, let's work through this together. This was a tough one. JOEY: I got 110. TEACHER: You got 110. Okay, let's work through it together. I need you to set 77 on your abacus please. PARAS: 77 TEACHER: Set 77. And we want to add what? What's the second number in our problem, Paras? PARAS: 77 + 53 TEACHER: Okay, go to your tens column. We want to add what Paras? PARAS: 5 TEACHER: Do we have a 5 to add? PARAS: No. TEACHER: No, what's the secret for adding 5? PARAS: To add 5... TEACHER: set 1... PARAS: left TEACHER: Good. Now we need to go to our ones column and add a 3. Do we have 3? PARAS: no TEACHER: No, what's the secret for adding 3? PARAS: clear 7 TEACHER: Clear 7, set 1... PARAS: set 1 left TEACHER: Alright, what'd you get? JOEY: 130 TEACHER: 130, okay go ahead and write your..., are you erasing? Nice erasing. [sound of braillewriter] I'm going to have you back up a little because you're writing over the next one. Drop your numbers. Okay, we're up to checking on the calculator. Your turn Joey. JOEY: No, I don't want to use the calculator. TEACHER: I will use the calculator. Yes, Miss Knowles. JOEY: no TEACHER: I will use the calculator. TEACHER: I will use the calculator, thanks!
