Project Math Access DVD 01 - Early Childhood - Part 02 Transcript Start Audio Description: Part two, Tactile concepts: straight and curved lines. TEACHER: Today we're going to work on early Math concepts of straight and curved lines. We're going to use the Tactile Treasures from American Printing House and the picture maker, The Wheatley Tactile Drawing Kit. Alright Dijana, let’s put your frog in your lap. And I'm going to get my page out and we're going to look at straight and curved lines. Audio Description: The figures are embossed on the plastic pages. TEACHER: Hand down, there you go. Okay, let’s look at the top of the page. Look at the lines at the top of the page. Can you find the two that are straight? Audio Description: Dijana taps the straight lines. TEACHER: Okay, show me, which two are straight? DIJANA: This one and this one. TEACHER: Okay, good job. Alright, let’s look at the bottom of the page. DIJANA: and see what is curved TEACHER: You're right, we're going to find the curved lines now. DIJANA: There's the curved one. TEACHER: There are three curved lines, so look at all the lines. DIJANA: one, two, three TEACHER: Alright, three, good. And those are railroad tracks. Those are railroad tracks. DIJANA: That's a road. TEACHER: It's like a road, and the pictures up on the top are like blocks. Alright, so we're going to get some objects out over here. DIJANA: Is the road curved? TEACHER: Well, some of the roads are curved and some of them are straight. Let's see what we have here; we have some big blocks here. I have a couple of big blocks here. Alright, here are two. Let's look at the first one here. DIJANA: straight TEACHER: straight, and how about that one? DIJANA: curved TEACHER: curved, that's right. These are the big blocks. Alright, we're going to push those to the side and now I have a couple of little blocks. Can you give me the curved? Audio Description: Dijana hands the curved block to the teacher. TEACHER: Alright, and which one is this? DIJANA: the straight TEACHER: the straight, alright. And now I have a road. DIJANA: Is the road curved? TEACHER: Well let's see, I have two actually. Which one is this one? DIJANA: straight, curved TEACHER: hmm, straight or curved? DIJANA: curved TEACHER: And that one is straight. DIJANA: Is the road curved, Ms. Parker? TEACHER: This road is curved and this road is straight. You know we can put them together. And so we go down the road and it's curved and then it's straight. DIJANA: Is the road curved, Ms. Parker? Say yes. TEACHER: The road is curved. Alright, now we have a couple new things today. DIJANA: Ooh, new things. TEACHER: Yep. Alright, here is our tube. Our tube is...? DIJANA: straight TEACHER: straight, can you make that curved? (sound of plastic bending) There you go. That's our fun tube. If you pull it out, you can make it longer. DIJANA: Can I put the tube together? TEACHER: You can put it together; what are you going to make? You have to pull it apart and then you can put it together. Audio Description: Dijana bends the tube and puts the two ends together. TEACHER: What shape is that going to make? DIJANA: A curved line TEACHER: A curved line, that's right. Do you want to put it together? Here you go. Audio Description: The teacher helps Dijana put the two ends of the tube together. TEACHER: There you go. Now it's curved; now it's almost like a circle. DIJANA: Now I'm going to take it apart. TEACHER: Alright, why don't you give me that curved tube, and I have one more thing to show you. Alright, now look on the table here. We have a straight line. It's kind of like a wire, kind of like a snake. DIJANA: Is that a wire? TEACHER: There's a wire in there; we can bend it to make it curved. DIJANA: Is this a snake or the wire? Audio Description: Dijana bends the object. TEACHER: It's a snake. Alright, there you go. You made it curved. Let's straighten it out again. DIJANA: straight? TEACHER: Now it's straight, and now it's curved. Audio Description: Dijana hands the object to the teacher. TEACHER: Alright, thank you. Alright, now we're going to get our tactile kit out. Can you help me out by putting the straight and curved lines on the left side of the book here? DIJANA: Is that the flannel board book? TEACHER: Yes. I want you to put them all on there for me. Audio Description: The book opens to a flat, flannel surface. The straight and curved pieces are made of plastic. TEACHER: Keep going. Did you drop one? Dijana? Alright, let's pick them up and put them on the left side of the page here. Audio Description: The teacher puts straight, plastic pieces on the board. TEACHER: Picking them up? Okay, we're going to put our straight lines and our curved lines on the page. Audio Description: There are straight and curved pieces scattered on the left-side of the board. TEACHER: Okay, do you have one in your hand? Let's put it on. Alright, now on the right side of our page here, we have a line right in the middle of the page. What we're going to do today is we're going to take the straight lines, and put it above the line Audio Description: The teacher helps Dijana put the piece above the line. TEACHER: And then, you're going to take the curved lines, pick them up, and put them below the line. Alright, find another one on the left. So, you're just sorting the straight lines and the curved lines. Nice job. Audio Description: So far, Dijana has put three curved pieces on the right-side of the board, below the line. TEACHER: We have a few more to go; look around on that page. Audio Description: Dijana puts a straight piece below the line. TEACHER: Where does the straight line go? DIJANA: Right above. TEACHER: Above, that's right, good job. Audio Description: Dijana finds another straight piece and puts it above the line. TEACHER: Turn it over. What shape is that? DIJANA: A curved line TEACHER: A curved line DIJANA: It goes below and the straight line above TEACHER: That's right, goes below and above. Audio Description: Dijana continues to correctly sort the pieces. TEACHER: Alright, you have about three more left there. Nice looking, okay. Good job, one more, on the left side of the page. Audio Description: Dijana searches for the last piece. TEACHER: Alright, let's count how many straight lines we have. Let's count how many we have. DIJANA: One. TEACHER: Two. Can you count with me? TEACHER AND DIJANA: Three, four, five, six TEACHER: Well, you're awfully quiet today. How about the bottom, the curved lines? Can you count them for me? DIJANA: One TEACHER: One DIJANA: Two, three, four, five, six, seven TEACHER: Good job. Okay, you're all finished.
