This is very closely tied with complexity. The farther away something is from the eyes, the more visual targets are contained in the visual array. Here's the video of a student who compensates for this by holding something very close to her eyes to look at it even though she is not nearsighted. It's a strategy she has developed to effectively block out everything that is behind it, reducing the visual complexity and making visual attention on the target easier.
