Patty Obrzut: I'd also like to talk briefly about stereotypical behavior. Now stereotypical behavior has to be respected as part of a child's personality; it's part of their self-identity. I always like to tell people the story. I'm embarrassed to say but I sucked my thumb until I was quite old, until I was five years old. And my dad was always trying to get me to stop. He would put tape on my thumb. He would do anything. He would tell me to stop. He'd yell at me to stop, and no matter what he, did I kept sucking my thumb. But only until I decided to stop sucking my thumb, did I stop. [ Slide start: ] Description Start: Title: Stereotypical Behaviors Content: • Must be respected as part of a child's personality. (Self-identity) • Requests or demands to stop the stereotypical behavior means that the child is requested to alter his/her personality immediately.
