Everybody find a piece of tape. Sit where there's a piece of tape. Audio Description: The teacher has placed masking tape on the table, sticky-side up. The ends are then taped to the table to hold it in place. TEACHER: Look in front of you. If there's no piece of tape, switch your chairs. Go sit where there is one. STUDENT: This is one right here. TEACHER: Then you don't need to move. (students talking) Audio Description: The children play with the tape, putting their fingers on sticky part. The teacher places containers on the table. One container has straws in it. They are all the same size. TEACHER: We're going to do some patterns. Audio Description: Another has buttons of different sizes and colors. TEACHER: Some one name me a pattern. Audio Description: The third has small plastic pieces of different sizes and colors, called 'Crazy Bones.' TYSHAWN: Red, red, blue. TEACHER: Keep going. Say a pattern. TYSHAWN: Red, red, blue,... TEACHER: Keep going. TEACHER: What would be next? TYSHAWN: Orange, orange,... TEACHER: You gotta keep the same pattern. TYSHAWN: Red, red, blue... TEACHER: Again. TYSHAWN: Red, red, blue. TEACHER: Keep going. TYSHAWN: Red,red, blue. Red, red, blue. TEACHER: You got it. TEACHER: Give me another pattern. STUDENT: Green, green, yellow. Green, green, yellow. Green, green, yellow. TEACHER: Good. Evelin, give me a pattern. EVELIN: Red, yellow. Red, yellow. Red, yellow. TEACHER: You have it. Do you know what letters that is? And we would change it to a "A" and a "B", what would it be? TEACHER: A, B. A, B. (teacher and Evelin) A B A B A B TEACHER: Okay. Katarina, give me another pattern. KATARINA: Orange, orange, white. TEACHER: Do it again. KATARINA: Orange, organge, white. TEACHER: Again. KATARINA: Orange, organge, white. Orange, orange, white. TEACHER: Tina? TINA (softly): Orange, orange, yellow. TEACHER: I like it. Keep going. You have to keep going with your pattern. TINA: Orange, orange, red. TEACHER: Keep it yellow. TEACHER: Say it over and over again. That makes it a pattern. TINA: Red, red, yellow. Red, red, yellow. TEACHER: Excellent. Angelica, yourturn. ANGELICA: Pink, pink, blue. Pink, pink, blue. Pink, pink, blue. TEACHER: You have it. Now I'm going to do a pattern, and you are going to copy it. TEACHER: Are you ready? TEACHER (claps hands, stomps feet): Clap, clap, stomp. Clap, clap, stomp. (students join in) Clap, clap, stomp. We're not going to do color this time. We are going to do shapes. ANGELICA: Coooool. TEACHER: We have a collection of crazy bones. Audio Description: The Crazy Bones are in a one-gallon, plastic bucket. You want to feel. We have a collection of buttons. STUDENT: Where's the bones? TEACHER: They're plastic pieces. Audio Description: The straws and buttons are in small rectangular containers. TEACHER: And, our counting straws. Feel. I am going to tell you what pattern you are going to make. I'm going to a make a... Yoo-hoo, my turn. I'm going to... stop and listen. Crazy bone... I put the tape on here so they don't knock it over. Crazy bone, button. Crazy bone, button. What am I going to put next? STUDENTS: Crazy bones. TEACHER: Then what? STUDENTS: "Crazy bone", "Button". TYSHAWN: Crazy bone... button. TYSHAWN: Button. TEACHER: Thank you, Tyshawn. TEACHER: Keep going. TYSHAWN: Crazy bone... button. TEACHER: When can I stop? TYSHAWN: Button, crazy bone, button. TEACHER: Can I stop yet? It doesn't stick anymore. Can we change these to letters? Crazy bones are "A", buttons are (students and teacher together) A, B, A, B, A, B, A, B Okay, I'm going to put my crazy bones back. I'm taking my buttons off. Think I could use three things? Can you guys help me with my pattern? STUDENTS: Yeah! TEACHER: Okay, here we go. TYSHAWN: What's this..... TEACHER: Tyshawn, eyes here. I'm putting crazy bone, button, straw. What goes next? ANGELICA: Crazy bone... button, straw. TEACHER: Thank you, Angelica. Crazy bone... STUDENTS: Buttons. STUDENTS: Straw. TEACHER: I think you've got it. Alright, we're going to take this off. I'm going to make one more pattern. and then you're going to make your own patterns, and read them to me. Okay? Hold on... See if you can tell me how to finish my pattern now. Tyshawn, body check. Here we go. Listen,... Iisten. Crazy bone, crazy bone, straw. Crazy bone, crazy bone, straw. TEACHER: Next... STUDENT: Crazy bone, crazy bone, straw. TEACHER: Everybody. STUDENTS: Crazy bone, crazy bone, straw. Students: Crazy bone, crazy bone, straw. TEACHER: Perfect. I'm going to change crazy bones to "A" and my straw is B. Now what do I have? Now, I'm going to put out.... Who's going to grab during this lesson? STUDENTS: Not me! TEACHER: That's good news. Who's going to say "Please may I have some?" STUDENTS: Meeee! TEACHER: I'm going to put some out... And we're each going to make a pattern and then you're going to have to read me that pattern. With letters, and with shapes. Audio Description: The places hands full of Crazy Bones, buttons and straws on the table. TEACHER: In front of you. Crazy bones... buttons... straws. Those are for you and Evelin. Straws... (students and teacher talk) TEACHER: You may use the boxes. Go. You need to make the pattern, and then repeat the pattern again. TEACHER: It's sticks a little.... it won't slide around. TEACHER: A.... (students talking as they create patterns) "Crazy bone..", "A, B..","You're copying me." (students continue to talk and make patterns) Audio Description: The blind student has a created a pattern of straw, button, straw, button. STUDENT: I need help. TEACHER: What pattern do you want to make? STUDENT: (inaudible) TEACHER: Then do it again. STUDENT: I need some more crazy bones. TEACHER: More crazy bones coming up. (students and teacher talk) Audio Description: We now jump forward in this activity. TEACHER: You're incredible. Can you read to me? Audio Description: Evelin now has a new pattern. TEACHER: So if you want two straws, you need to put the "A" first. You want "B" to be the straws. STUDENT: I mixed up. TEACHER: Okay, I will help you. TEACHER: Give me an A. Anything.
