Audio Description: The teacher hands out sheets of paper with shamrocks drawn on them. TEACHER: I need everyone to listen now. Audio Description: The blind student's shamrock is outlined with a glue gun. STUDENT: What's a shamrock. TEACHER: This cloverleaf. Audio Description: The teacher has a bag filled with plastic blocks. STUDENT: I thought it is supposed to be green? TEACHER: We're going to make it green. My turn for directions. We are going to estimate... twice. We are going to estimate how many blocks will fit on our shape. If we get to it, we are going to estimate how many pieces of candy... STUDENTS: Woo hoo! TEACHER: ...will fit on our shamrock. TEACHER: Guess what color the candy is? STUDENT: Green. TEACHER: Green. But our blocks are multicolor. Now, I'm going to put about 5 blocks on my shamrock. Alright, five blocks to fill up one of the corners... ...of my shamrock. Audio Description: The blocks are about one inch square. TEACHER: You're going to feel along with me. Now, I'm going to estimate. Tyshawn, eyes over here. Girls.... Here we go. I'm going to estimate and grab my blocks... Five, 10, 15, 20, 25. I think 25 blocks will fill this shamrock. Pass me a pen, Katarina. Audio Description: Katarina selects a pen from a cup and hands it to the teacher. TEACHER: I'm going to write 25... ...on the bottom of my paper. Audio Description: The teacher grabs a handful of blocks. TEACHER: Now I'm going to fill up my shamrock. Tyshawn... eyes. I'm going to fill up my shamrock with blocks. And then I'm going to count them. STUDENT: I don't know how to do this. TEACHER: That's why you're watching. Audio Description: The teacher continues to add blocks to her shamrock. TEACHER: Do you think there's 25? How do you think I guessed? GirIs.... STUDENT: There can't be 25. TEACHER: You don't think there's 25? TEACHER: Okay, I'm all covered up,... my shamrock. Now, I'm going to make sets of what? What should I make sets of? Angelica? STUDENT: Seven. TEACHER: Groups of... STUDENT: Ten. TEACHER: You got it. Here we go, my turn. Hands still. Body Check! Audio Description: As the teacher counts the blocks, she moves them off the shamrock. TEACHER: Body check, hands still. Thanks. Count with me....One,... (students and teacher count together) ...two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. One group. Audio Description: The teacher pushes the first group of blocks off to the side. TEACHER: (together) 11,12,13,14,15... ...16,17,18,19,20. TEACHER: How many groups? STUDENT: Two. TEACHER: Two groups are 20. Audio Description: The teacher starts a third group. TEACHER: (together) 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, Twenty-six. I was a better estimator this time. Twenty-six. Two groups of what? TEACHER: Two groups of... ten, and how many left over? STUDENT: Six. TEACHER: Six. Twenty-six. I guessed 25. I guessed one less than I should have. Was that a good guess? Too high, too low, or just right. STUDENTS: "Too Iow", "Too high". TEACHER: Too low. Just a pinch too low. Audio Description: We jump foward to Tyshawn counting blocks. TEACHER: Fifty. What's left over? Fifty, 51, 52, 53. What's a 53 look like? A five, and a... Five groups of 10, and how many left over? TYSHAWN: Three.
