I have 8 students and they range in age from 5 through 9. They all have a visual impairment and other disabilities such as, Autism, speech and communication delays, developmental disabilities, cognitive probably functioning more in the ages of 2 to 3, some up to 5-year level. So right now, when we're setting up for snack we're working on skills of counting one-to-one correspondence. We're providing the children braille as well as picture cards, Mayer Johnson cards, as well as sight words. Stephanie and Maura, we're going to get ready for snack. What are we having for snack today? Audio Description: The teacher hands Maura a can. TEACHER: Do you know what that is Maura? MAURA: What is it? TEACHER: Let's see. It's in a can. Why don't you pass it to Stephanie, and see if she can guess maybe what's in that can? Audio Description: Maura hands the can to Stephanie. TEACHER: What do you think that might be, Stephanie? Audio Description: Stephanie shakes the can. STEPHANIE: I think it's apple juice. TEACHER: Apple juice, oh that's a good guess. You know what, it's peaches. We're having peaches today. Alright, so first of all, we need to know how many students are here. How many students are here today? So, can you go check our chart and find out how many students are here today? MAURA: That's a good question. I'll go start counting. TEACHER: Okay. Audio Description: Stephanie and Maura walk, hand-in-hand, to a board by the classroom door. Maura counts nametags on the left-side of the board, touching each one as she counts. MAURA: 1, 2, 3, 4... ...5, 6, 7. 7? Audio Description: Maura finishes counting and walks back to the table with the teacher. MAURA: There are 7 kids here today. TEACHER: Are you going to check Stephanie? There are 7 kids here today? Alright Maura, can you tell me which number is 7? STEPHANIE: 7! TEACHER: Good job, Steph! Audio Description: Stephanie finishes counting, and starts toward the table. TEACHER: Number 7, there you go, that's number 7. Okay Steph, come on back to the table and we're going to look at the number 7. Audio Description: Maura examines a cardboard square with a seven on it. TEACHER: Alright, so we have to set up for 7 kids. Audio Description: The teacher takes the card. TEACHER: Let's pass that to Steph. Audio Description: And hands it to Stephanie. TEACHER: Find the number 7, there you go, number 7, okay. Good job! Alright, first of all, what are we going to use to open this can? How are we going to get this can open? MAURA: A can opener. A can opener? Okay, here's our... STEPHANIE: Will I get a turn? Audio Description: The teacher hands Stephanie a standard can opener. TEACHER: Yes, you'll get a turn. So, there's our can opener. MAURA: And you know, I'm not sure if have peaches at my house. Maybe I could buy some and bring some here. TEACHER: Well, maybe we can tell your Mom and Dad you had peaches from a can, here at school. STEPHANIE: How do you open it? TEACHER: This is how you open it up and you put in on the can and then you squeeze it. Squeeze, use those muscles. Audio Description: The teacher helps Stephanie squeeze the handles of the can opener together. TEACHER: Hear it? Alright and then this is where you're going to turn to open. Squeeze that and turn, turn. Okay Maura, you're going to get to help too. Alright Steph, we're going to pass it to Maura so she can get a chance to look at the can opener. Audio Description: The teacher passes the partially opened can to Maura. TEACHER: Alright, here's the handle of the can opener, because we're almost at the end, alright? Audio Description: The teacher finishes opening the can. TEACHER: Alright, and the can is open. Alright, so we're going to put the... can you smell those peaches? STEPHANIE: Can I smell them? TEACHER: Yes, you may smell them. Oh, peaches, alright. Now what we're going to have to do is we're going to have to figure out what we're going to use to set the table. What do we need when we eat peaches? Audio Description: The teacher holds up a card that has 'spoon' written and brailled on it. STEPHANIE: Spoon. TEACHER: Spoon? Do you agree Maura? Are we going to need a spoon? MAURA: Yep! TEACHER: We have a spoon. Here we go Steph; here's the spoon card. We are going to need a spoon. Audio Description: Stephanie reads the braille. TEACHER: What else do we need Maura? MAURA: Cups! TEACHER: We need cups for our water. And what's the last thing we have here Maura? MAURA: Placemat. TEACHER: Placemats, do we need placemats? MAURA: Yes. TEACHER: Alright, so Maura, I'm going to have you get the cups and the bowls and Stephanie, you're going to get the napkins and the spoons and then bring them all back to the red table. And I'll grab the placemats. Audio Description: The teacher gave them cards with the items they needed to get. However, they leave them on a table and walk over to a cabinet. Okay, good job, Steph. Bring them to the table. Audio Description: Stephanie brings the cups, and puts them on the table. TEACHER: Alright, are you going to get the napkins now? STEPHANIE: Yep. TEACHER: Alright. Audio Description: Stephanie returns to the cabinet as Maura approaches the table with the bowls. TEACHER: Nice job Maura. Okay Maura, while Stephanie is getting the napkins, I want you to take a look at the names on the placemats. Maura, how are you doing? Let's look at this table and see how many more cups we need on this table. Look at each placemat. Audio Description: Maura examines the place settings on the table. TEACHER: Does Stephanie have a cup? MAURA: No. TEACHER: Alright, can you put one on her placemat? Audio Description: Maura places a cup on the placemat. TEACHER: Okay, where else? And where else? Audio Description: Maura places a cup on the only remaining placemat without one. TEACHER: Good. You're going to put the bowls on next and Stephanie's going to get the spoons. MAURA: Obviously... TEACHER: Do you have enough? MAURA: Obviously... Audio Description: Maura has two bowls in her hand is not sure what she should do with them. TEACHER: I think we're all set. We have 2 at the red table, 1 at the green table and 4 at the yellow table. So, you can put the extra away. Alright, remember the spoon goes on top of the napkin on the left side of the bowl. Steph let's find out where the bowl is. Okay, on top of the napkin on the left side. Alright, do we need more spoons, Maura? MAURA: Yeah, I'll get some more. Audio Description: Maura goes to the cabinet. TEACHER: There's the bowl, so Steph, hold on. Where does it go? We're not going to put them in the bowl, we're going to put them on the napkin on the left. There you go.
