Project Math Access DVD 04 - Application of Math Skills - Part 04 Transcript Start Audio Description: Part four; using a spreadsheet. TEACHER: I've pulled up an 8th grade student's spreadsheet. And this is what Peter will be doing next year as a 7th grader. This particular student is an 8th grader, so, she‘s got quite a bit of money here, and I'll kind of show you, you can kind of see what she‘s done, some of her activity in her check register. Now Peter, next year, he will, at the very beginning, will even have to set up the codes for telling the computer to add this column or to subtract this column. And they go over that as a class and really step-by-step, and he will do that here in the vision room, though. Because Peter will use Microsoft Excel plus the JAWS reading program in order to manipulate his check register. And we‘ve got JAWS on; hopefully it's going to speak here. Let me get right here. [JAWS speaks] TEACHER: Okay and JAWS speaks what line and what column it is, which will help Peter when he goes to set this up and to understand what‘s going on. Now this particular student, check 10/16 is in there, and then the date, who the payee is, okay and then when Peter goes to put in that he wrote a check to Albright nursery for $212, it will automatically balance his account and he won‘t ever have to add or subtract correctly, because the computer is going to do this for him. So, this is going to make his life a lot easier. And this is Microsoft Excel, so this is something Peter, probably, his family already has at home, right? PETER: Yeah. TEACHER: And with the JAWS program that will allow him that this is really something functional that he can even do at home. And hopefully pretty soon he will get his own checking account and if he wants to, he can take the directions that he will be given and set this up for himself.
