Project Math Access DVD 03 - Algebra - Part 04 Transcript Start Audio Description: Part four; solving equations using the FOIL method; example two. TEACHER: Okay, if you want to read number 2 and I will take these off. JOHN: Okay, number 2, in open parenthesis, we have 8x + 4y, followed by closed parenthesis which is followed immediately by an open parenthesis and 2x + 6, close parenthesis. So again, we need to do First, Outsides, lnsides, Last. The first numbers are 8x and 2x. Multiply those and you get 16x squared. That's going to be the first thing I do. TEACHER: Wait one second, you went too fast. I'm leaving the X's off the board, so you can just grab them. JOHN: Okay TEACHER: They're by your right hand here. JOHN: Sure. Audio Description: The teacher finishes clearing the Tack Tile board. TEACHER: Alright. Okay. JOHN: Alright. JOHN: Here's a 5... TEACHER: Just to keep in mind, all the odd numbers are on your left side, and even numbers are on your right side. JOHN: Okay. Audio Description: John, again, starts in the upper left-hand corner. JOHN: Here we go. Sixteen... 16... x Could you hand me a subscript? Audio Description: He should have said he needed a superscript. JOHN: 15x, and this would be to the second. Okay. Audio Description: John refers to the equation written on brailled paper. JOHN: Now outsides,... to that we have to add 48x because I'm multiplying the 8x by 6. TEACHER: Good job. JOHN: Oops. There we go. Oops, 4's the right number here. Audio Description: John continues building the equation on the first line. TEACHER: Now you have 16x squared plus 48 JOHN: X... TEACHER: X. JOHN: Okay, now the inside numbers The inside numbers are 4y and 2x So you multiply those two together and you're going to get 8xy, which is what needs to be added. Audio Description: The teacher watches as John continues to build the equation. TEACHER: And then the Y's are where? There's one Y next to the X's. JOHN: Okay. TEACHER: X's are on the other side. On the other board. JOHN: Okay, the Y's,...that's the numbers right there. Audio Description: The teacher taps her finger on the Tack Tile Y's. JOHN: Okay... the Y's... Okay, now the final step is multiplying... the 6 and the 4y, those are the last numbers. So 4y multiplied by 6 is 24y, which needs to be added. Audio Description: John adds the Tack Tile plus sign, then searches for the Tack Tiles for 24y. TEACHER: The numbers are on the board. JOHN: That's right, I keep forgetting that. Audio Description: John searches for the correct Tack Tiles to complete the equation. John, locates a Tack Tile Y and adds it to the equation. TEACHER: So, why don't you read me what you have so far. JOHN: Okay, on this first line 16x to the second, plus... Uhm, plus... plus 48x... plus... 8xy... plus... 24y. JOHN: Okay TEACHER: Okay. JOHN: Now reading that I can tell that there aren't any terms we can combine I'm just checking that again to make sure that I'm right. ...pIus 24y. Nope. That's the final answer. TEACHER: Good job.
