Five are low vision. One is blind. TEACHER: Okay, I need body check. TEACHER: What do we do first thing when we come in? STUDENTS: Write our numbers from 1 to 60. TEACHER: You want to try 60 today? TEACHER: You try as high as you can. STUDENT: Then I'll go to a 100 then. TEACHER: Then hit it, baby. Audio Description: The blind student is using a braille writer. TYSHWAN: I'll do 110. TEACHER: No, 100 is the top. (braille writer sounds) Audio Description: The low vision students are using sheets of paper with eight rows. Each row has ten boxes in it. The sheets are held on slanted clipboards. TEACHER: Okay, go. Audio Description: Angelica writes the numbers one through eight accurately, but puts a ten where the nine should go. TEACHER: Got it? (braille writer sounds) Audio Description: Katarina completes her first row with the numbers one through ten. TEACHER: What comes after 8? STUDENT: 9 TEACHER: I'll put magic tape on here. TEACHER: Yes, Katarina? KATARINA: How is this? TEACHER: 1-1, 1-2... what number? KATARINA: 1-3. TEACHER: This is magic tape, for the dark line markers. TEACHER: It covers up their errors... TEACHER: ...and its magic wipes it away. Audio Description: The students continue working on their assignment. Angelica begins here second row, and puts a 12 in the first box. TEACHER: I need help, please. ANGELICA: I need help. TEACHER: Okay, what happened? Audio Description: The teacher has a piece of white correction tape. TEACHER: Tell me what happened. ANGELICA: I made a 1 and a 1 and a 1.... TEACHER: So which one should I cover up? ANGELICA: That one. TEACHER: Okay, so what needs to go there? Audio Description: The teacher covers the mistake with the tape. TEACHER: Look at our last number, what's our last number? TEACHER: What goes there? ANGELICA: A 1.... TEACHER: And a...... ANGELICA: 1 TEACHER: Good, and what number is that? ANGELICA: Eleven! TEACHER: You got it! Audio Description: Angelica writes eleven in the first box of the second row. (background sounds...students talking) Audio Description: Tony writes 14 on correction tape on his sheet, then writes 12 where 15 belongs. The teacher is not aware of the mistake. (teacher converses with student...inaudibIe) TEACHER: This is an activity that occurs when the kids come in the class... before we start our actual math lesson for the day... so it's a drill and practice. We started with 1 thru 10. Now the kids are up to an average of 50. And our speed demons are up to 100. Audio Description: Tyshawn has correctly written the numbers one through 22 on his sheet. (background sounds...braiIIe writer, students talking) Audio Description: He now writes in 23. The blind student uses a braille writer to complete the assignment. TEACHER: We use black line markers for contrast on the kids' papers... We have a grid to keep them a little more organized. They can see their number patterns. We use white Post-It tape... and it's a quick easy way for the kids to feel confident and worry about making a mistake. We just cover it up. Okay, a couple more minutes...see how far you can get. We're moving on! Audio Description: A piece of correction tape is placed on Angelica's sheet, and she writes 23 on it. TEACHER: Katarina, you can stop at 30. TEACHER: What number comes next? KATARINA: I know. TEACHER: Okay, let's see. What's the last number that you wrote? KATARINA: 29. TEACHER: 29, what comes after 29? KATARINA: 30. TEACHER: You got it. TEACHER: How many groups of 10 is that? KATARINA: 3. TEACHER: How many left over? KATARINA: Zero. TEACHER: You got it. Put your name on it. Angelica, go to 30 and you will be done. Tyshawn, you can stop there. We're going to play find a number. You can stop Angelica. We're going to play the number game. Keep your number boards up. Everybody put your finger on 1. Audio Description: The students put their finger on one. TEACHER: Go! Everybody put your finger on 5. Audio Description: The students locate the five. TEACHER: Git ‘em! STUDENTS: Got ‘em! TEACHER: Everyone put your finger on 10. What's a 10 look like? STUDENTS: A 1 and a 0. TEACHER: Good. How many groups of 10 is that? STUDENT: 10. TEACHER: How groups, how many bundles? STUDENTS: 1. TEACHER: 1, and how many are left over? STUDENTS: Zero. TEACHER: (simulates bell) Ding ding ding. I'm going to get a crayon, and you are going to color by 5's. Audio Description: The students grab crayons from a box. TEACHER: One color only, please. What's the first number we are going to color in? STUDENTS: 5. TEACHER: Everyone color in your 5's. Go! Audio Description: The students color the boxes with the number five. TYSHAWN: Next number is 10. ANGELICA: Let's color 10. TEACHER: Hit it! Audio Description: The students color in the ten. TEACHER: Go ahead, you got it. 5, 10,... STUDENTS: 15. ANGELICA: Where's 15? TEACHER: Okay, 1 group of 10 and 5 left over. 10, and then you have to count 5 more. 1, 2, 3,4, 5. 1 group of 10, 5 left over. 15, you got it. 5,10,15, 20, 25, 30... Tyshawn, you missed the 20's over there. 5,...say it with me. STUDENTS: 5,10,...... TEACHER: Where's 15. 15 needs attention. Okay? When they're all colored we're going to say them together and touch them as we go. Everybody put your finger on 5. Put your finger on 5. Tyshawn, put your finger on it.
